LANCE HAWLEY [watch the interview]
In 1985, when I was nine years old, I attended WCYC for the first time. I stayed in the old Dreamland cabin, perhaps in the last year of its use. Each summer, I made that happy pilgrimage for two weeks to Fall Hall Glen to be saturated with the natural world, teaching about Jesus, and the love of God’s people. Camp was the highlight of my childhood summers. After finishing my last year as a camper, I went off to York College, and I came back the next several summers to counsel at Senior session.
My wife, Laura, and I moved to Memphis for four years and then to Madison, WI in 2003 to do church planting work. Since moving back to Wisconsin, I have worked all of the various sessions (Junior-Senior), including directing Junior and serving as head counselor or head teacher for the other sessions. Our kids, Sage, Clay, and Lydia all attended camp through the years and are now starting to come back as counselors. In the last five years or so, our family has been investing in campers with Senior camp.
Our family moved to Memphis in 2015, when I completed my PhD in Od Testament studies. I teach at Harding School of theology, which recently relocated to Searcy, AR. Laura and I have now been in Arkansas for a little more than a year. We still care deeply for God’s mission through WCYC and plan to keep coming back to serve. We also love the place of Fall Hall Glen and have pictures of camp all over our house. It feels a bit like a shrine, but when I see the enlarged pictures of the upper falls and Wilderness Chapel, it reminds me of the wondrous ways that God has moved in the lives of campers through the years.
KEVIN MORRILL [watch the interview]
Hello, I'm Kevin Morrill, and I currently serve as the Family Life Minister at the Southside Church of Christ in Milwaukee. Every year since 2016, I have spent two weeks serving WCYC at Intermediate Session in various roles, with a single Junior Session thrown in for good measure.
I served on the WCYC board from December 2019 through October 2022. During my time on the board, I served on both the Finance and PR/Communication Committees. I am still involved in the PR Committee as a non-board member. While I am no social influencer, I am passionate about using digital media to connect WCYC with the wider world. This passion is tempered by a deep desire to maintain contact with those who may be hesitant to use digital platforms. I think one of my greatest gifts may be that I can see the value in both trying new ideas and maintaining cherished "camp" traditions.
If you haven't already either become a Lifetime Member or pay your Annual Membership dues then, join us in person at Southside or online via Zoom on October 18th. Vote for me if you feel so moved, but more importantly, please vote to accept the proposed revised bylaws.
DALE NELSON [watch the interview]
Greetings. I am Dale M Nelson. I have been a preacher for 42 years in the Mid northern area of the USA. Currently, I have been preaching for the Fond du Lac church of Christ for almost 13 years. I have been married to Sandra Nelson for 42 years and we have one daughter, Anna. Besides my ministry experience I am a retired Army Reserve Chaplain. I have 31 years of total service in the Act Army, Army National Guard, and Army Reserve. I spent twenty of those years as a Chaplain and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel. My hobbies include, running, swimming, camping, grilling, and reading the Bible.
My introduction to the camp begins with preacher’s retreats, Marriage Retreats, and I started working at Bible Camp Sessions when our daughter became a Camper. I have served as Head Bible Teacher, Bible Teacher, cabin counselor, and worked in the kitchen. I am a trained counselor with a Master of Arts in Counseling, and I also have a Master of Divinity in ministry. I have been involved with workdays at camp for over 40 years and helping repair trails and other areas. I have helped with teacher curriculum and even prepared a curriculum on “Does God Exist” As a cabin counselor I spent time talking with campers about life experiences and have influenced many campers through the years. I was also involved in organizing many cabin devotionals besides participating in the larger camp devotionals.
Currently I am on the Camp Board and am working on the Finance Committee. I desire to continue serving on the board and have a vision for the camp and my service there. I can continue with the Finance Committee. This is an important committee that oversees the camp expenses. The committee balances the budget, so we have the finances to accomplish our goals. I could also serve with the buildings committee, as I have taken courses in building trades. I have helped people build their houses and even put an addition for a wood stove unto a mobile home we had in Bemidji, Minnesota. The board has several ongoing projects that I would like to see accomplished.
JENNIFER (ROERKOHL) SPECIAL [watch the interview]
My name is Jennifer (Roerkohl) Special. I grew up in the La Crosse, Wisconsin, area and began attending WCYC at a young age through Family Encampment with my family. From the start, I fell in love with the camp and the nurturing environment it provided. I attended Junior Camp through Senior Camp, and during my college years, I served as a counselor. I also began assisting in the nurse’s cabin, deepening my involvement. Over the years, I’ve returned to Family Camp with my own family, and I’m honored to now be part of the incredible teams that help teach children about our Savior each summer.
I currently reside in Walworth, Wisconsin with my husband and children. Our son Matthew is attending York University, while our daughters Morgan and Meleah are active in school and dance. We worship in Elkhorn, Wisconsin.
WCYC has had a profound impact on my life and faith, and I’ve witnessed it do the same for countless others. The lifelong friendships I’ve formed there are invaluable, and I want future campers and staff to have the same opportunity. I bring a collaborative spirit, a compassionate nature, and strong listening skills. With a medical background, a love for singing, and a heart for encouragement, I hope to contribute meaningfully to the WCYC Board. My goal is to help sustain the camp’s mission—sharing the knowledge of Christ—while ensuring it remains affordable and accessible. I’m also committed to supporting the efforts to ensure the camp’s long-term financial stability and continuing to show Jesus’ love to all who attend.
Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions. Thank you for your time and consideration.
